David Weitzman

David Weitzman attended classes in oil painting, figure drawing, design, serigraphy, and stone lithography at the Art Institute of Chicago from the age of eight to fourteen, but did not begin his work as a children’s book illustrator until his forties.

In the intervening years he attended Purdue University and Northwestern University for a M.A. in history, raised a family, studied Chinese art and literature, taught history and humanities classes from middle school to university, and trained student teachers for the University of California, Berkeley. He moved to Covelo in Mendocino County to apprentice and collaborate with book designer and printer James Robertson at the Yolla Bolly Press.

David's twenty books of historical narrative and fiction have received several awards including a Bronze Medal at The International Book Design Exhibition, Leipzig, Germany, a PEN Book Award, Association of Children’s Librarians Distinguished Book and The Children’s Africana Book Award. His illustrations have shown in galleries, libraries, and museums all over the country and Granada, Spain. Most recently he has been teaching classes on writing, illustrating, and designing children’s books.
