The Willits Center for the Arts in downtown Willits, Mendocino County, showcases the talents of local artists and artisans in exhibits that change monthly.

The May 2010 show features the works of Lisa Lee, Tamsen Donner, and Carolyn Hawley. Lisa Lee’s work is an eclectic mixture of media. She may begin creation of storage containers, for example, with materials she collects from thrift shops and other serendipitous resources. Lee applies protective layers to the outside and finishes with a nontoxic varnish. Final decorations can be leaves, feathers, beads, ribbons, or semiprecious stones. Art that’s practical as well as inspiring to the human spirit!

Tamsen Donner’s work features whimsical interpretations of birds and animals, landscapes, still life paintings, and representations of “life’s little comedies.” Growing up in rural California, the child of artistic parents, ranch animals and pets have remained an integral part of her continuing inspiration as an artist.

Carolyn Hawley is perhaps better known as founder and longtime conductor of the Ukiah Symphony. Her significant artistry is represented in this exhibit by her oil paintings. Her works of art have been featured in a number of county fairs and in corporate venues, such as Parducci Winery and Bank of America. Hawley refers to her work as “Magic Realism,” and says the landscapes of this area inspire her paintings. She is also known for her portraits of people and animals.

Take this opportunity to meet the artists and see and talk with them about their artwork. Both Tamsen and Carolyn live a very rural lifestyle, and do not travel to Willits very often. Plus, The Willits Center for the Arts offers the community a unique gallery space that really shows art as it should be seen. You won't want to miss the opening reception on Saturday, May 1, and sample Sheri Howe's delicious food offerings, as you mingle with friends, and new soon- to-be friends.
