A Shared Vision - Watercolors by Ann Maglinte & her Students

Opening Reception: Saturday, October 1st.
7:00 - 9:00 p.m.

The Willits Center for the Arts is pleased to present the October show,  A Shared Vision, featuring the work of Ann Maglinte and fifty-five of her watercolor students, past and present. "There is a wide range of experience among the painters in my classes," Maglinte says, "some of the students have been watercolor artists for years, and are art gallery members, and some have just begun to paint now that they are retired. There are also students who have a lot of experience in other mediums and are ready for a new approach to painting. This will create an exciting and interesting show with a wide range of styles, color palettes, and subject matter." Many of her students have been studying with Maglinte for years, and have become good friends sharing their vision of art together.

"Watercolor is known as one of the most challenging mediums because of it's spontaneous quality." says Maglinte. "It offers me a challenge each time I paint, and I am always looking for new techniques and ways to use it. I enjoy sharing what I have learned with my students, as we explore watercolor together. The advantages of watercolor are its calligraphic immediacy, its luminous color when used well, and the quality of light it offers on the paper. However, compositionally, and in terms of color, pictures need to be more pre-planned to some extent. The painter has only so many chances to layer colors in watercolor, before the picture becomes muddy. With each brushstroke, you're making your edge, shape, value and color decisions simultaneously. Since the amount of water in the brush controls the kind of marks you can make, you have to be aware of the consequences of each brush stroke, and the effect on the paper they will have. Working with my students in a classroom situation gives me the opportunity to share the skills I have learned over the years, and each time I teach, I learn more about watercolor."

Maglinte was awarded a degree in Painting from San Jose State University, and has studied at Mendocino College, the Mendocino Art Center and Sonoma State University. She and her husband are members of Northcoast Artists Gallery in Fort Bragg, where they show their garden sculpture and artwork, and former members of the Corner Gallery in Ukiah. She has been been showing her watercolors and teaching for many years to all ages. She was the recipient of the Champion of the Arts Award for Mendocino County in the Artist category, and is a commissioner for the Willits Center for the Arts.

Come to the Willits Center for the Arts on Saturday, October 1, and meet the artists at the Artists' Reception, with refreshments and music from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.
