A Happening:
Susie Racecar & Julie Byers

Opening Reception:
Saturday, December 3rd.
6:00 - 8:00 p.m.

December 3rd - 31st, 2011

Two local artists will be sharing their work at the December show at the Willits Center for the Arts. Susie Racecar and Julie Byers are both long-time residents of Laytonville and both create art that is inspired by nature.

Julie works in ceramics, using coil and slab built construction to create her sculptures. One of the inspirations for her sculptures is dance and movement. She also enjoys sculpting natural forms, such as trees and openings in nature, and incorporating negative and positive space in her work. She has created large garden sculptures and uses bright as well as natural colors in her gas fired pieces. Ms. Byers graduated with a BFA from San Jose State University, and a MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan, and was the recipient of a Fellowship Opportunity from St. John's Pottery in Collegeville, Minnesota.

Susie Racecar is a painter as well as a ceramic artist. She works in acrylics, and enjoys working in a large format. She sees the magical side of nature, as she portrays a fantasy world of trees, birds, castles, and water. Even Victorian buildings find their way into her paintings. She also works in clay, and uses colorful underglazes to decorate her hand-built pieces. She has been working on large puzzles in clay, that are made in sections with joints that fit together so well, that they hold the piece together without glue. Susie is a self-taught artist and has lived in Laytonville for twenty years.

Susie hopes this art opening will be "A Happening" with live music, refreshments, and video filming for You Tube. Come and meet the artists and share a great evening of inspiring art and community on Saturday, December 3rd from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
